Matthew 8:14-15
14 Jesus went into Peter’s house and saw his mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever. 15 So he touched her hand, and the fever left her. Then she got up and began to serve him.

Matthew 8:5-9
When he entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, pleading with him, “Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, in terrible agony.”  [Jesus] said to him, “Am I to come and heal him?” “Lord,” the centurion replied, “I am not worthy to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed.”  “For I too am a man under authority, having soldiers under my command. I say to this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this!’ and he does it.”

John 5:19
19 Jesus replied, “Truly I tell you, the Son is not able to do anything on his own, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, the Son likewise does these things.”

> Jesus is under the authority of the Father,

But at the same time, he has FULL authority, given to him by the Father.

Matthew 28:18
18 Jesus came near and said to them, “All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth…”

> 2 Key words:

Power – the power to do something

Authority – the right to do it

1) Jesus taught with authority

Matthew 7:29
29 [Jesus] was teaching them like one who had authority, and not like their scribes

2) Jesus had authority over demons and evil spirits.

Mark 1:27
27 They were all amazed, and so they began to ask each other: “What is this? A new teaching! With authority, he commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.”

3) Jesus had authority to cleanse the temple

Matthew 21:23
23 When he entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him as he was teaching and said, “By what authority are you doing these things? Who gave you this authority?”

4) Jesus had authority over his own life

John 10:17-18
17 [Jesus said,] “This is why the Father loves me, because I lay down my life so that I may take it up again. 18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down on my own. I have the right to lay it down, and I have the right to take it up again. I have received this command from my Father.”

5) Jesus will have eternal authority

Revelation 19:11-16
11 Then I saw heaven opened, and there was a white horse. Its rider is called Faithful and True, and he judges and makes war with justice. 12 His eyes were like a fiery flame, and many crowns were on his head. He had a name written that no one knows except himself. 13 He wore a robe dipped in blood, and his name is called the Word of God. 14 The armies that were in heaven followed him on white horses, wearing pure white linen. 15 A sharp sword came from his mouth, so that he might strike the nations with it. He will rule them with an iron rod. He will also trample the winepress of the fierce anger of God, the Almighty. 16 And he has a name written on his robe and on his thigh: King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

>> Key Question:

What does this mean in YOUR life?

You must willingly place your life under the authority of Christ.

Matthew 8:10, 13
10 Hearing this, Jesus was amazed and said to those following him, “Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with so great a faith.”  13 Then Jesus told the centurion, “Go. As you have believed, let it be done for you.” And his servant was healed that very moment.

Ephesians 2:8-9
For you are saved by grace through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is God’s gift— not from works, so that no one can boast.
