The Kingdom Unleashed #9 – Matthew 10:32-39
> Jesus’ bold statements:
32 “Therefore, everyone who will acknowledge me before others, I will also acknowledge him before my Father in heaven. 33 But whoever denies me before others, I will also deny him before my Father in heaven.”
Statement 1: True faith is shown to the world.
34 “Don’t assume that I came to bring peace on the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I came to turn “a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; 36 and a man’s enemies will be the members of his household.”
Statement 2: The gospel will divide.
37 “The one who loves a father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; the one who loves a son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.”
Statement 3: Your love for me must be far greater than all other loves in your life.
38 “And whoever doesn’t take up his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.”
Statement 4: Take up your cross and follow me.
23 Then he said to them all, “If anyone wants to follow after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow me.”
Jesus’ slogan: Come and Die
a) The cross was a symbol of humiliation
b) The cross was a symbol of suffering
22 [Jesus said,] “Blessed are you when people hate you, when they exclude you, insult you, and slander your name as evil because of the Son of Man.”
33 [Jesus said,} “You will have suffering in this world. Be courageous! I have conquered the world.”
29 For it has been granted to you on Christ’s behalf not only to believe in him, but also to suffer for him…

c) The cross was a symbol of death
“Christ says, “Give me all. I don’t want so much of your time and so much of your money and so much of your work: I want you. I have not come to torment your natural self, but to kill it. No half-measures are any good. I don’t want to cut off a branch here and a branch there. I want to have the whole tree down.” – CS Lewis-Mere Christianity
20 I have been crucified with Christ, and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
39 “Anyone who finds his life will lose it, and anyone who loses his life because of me will find it.”
Statement 5: When you die daily, you live in me!
2 Corinthians 5:17
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has passed away, and see, the new has come!
